history of the project

  • Newcastle Women's Aid was established in 1975

  • The service is run by women, for women at risk from domestic abuse

  • The Local Authority provided a small building and this was the City's first Refuge

  • In 1979 the Local Authority provided a larger building with a playroom, offices and a garden, to accommodate six families

  • In 1992 we expanded the service provision to include Outreach and aftercare support to women in the community

  • In 1996 we further increased our capacity to provide Outreach services

  • In 1997 we extended the Refuge with the help of the Local Authority

  • In 2001 we expanded the staff team to meet the need for children's work and administrative support

  • In addition to direct services, Newcastle Women’s Aid is involved in:

    • Multi-agency and partnership work

    • Newcastle Domestic Violence Forum

    • Strategic work on issues such as crime and disorder and homelessness
