| history of the project - Newcastle Women's Aid was established in 1975
- The service is run by women, for women at risk from domestic abuse
- The Local Authority provided a small building and this was the City's first Refuge
- In 1979 the Local Authority provided a larger building with a playroom, offices and a garden, to accommodate six families
- In 1992 we expanded the service provision to include Outreach and aftercare support to women in the community
- In 1996 we further increased our capacity to provide Outreach services
- In 1997 we extended the Refuge with the help of the Local Authority
- In 2001 we expanded the staff team to meet the need for children's work and administrative support
- In addition to direct services, Newcastle Women’s Aid is involved in:
- Multi-agency and partnership work
- Newcastle Domestic Violence Forum
- Strategic work on issues such as crime and disorder and homelessness
