Hear Her Roar: International Women's Day

International Women's Day is on March 8th every year and is a worldwide event day to honour and celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It's easy to think International Women's Day is solely about celebrating the women with recognisable names and achievements. That's not true. It's about celebrating the strong women around you.

Lily Matthews was the maiden name of Anne Swingler who died in 2011 aged 96, and the Lily Matthews Fund was set up in her honour. Anne had an extremely difficult start in life, born into the slums of Shieldfield in Newcastle, her mother dying when she was 8, and she experienced rape in her early teens.
